President and VP Candidates...

Madam Queen's picture

Now here I figured you would have jumped on this before me. Anyway, I would love to hear what people are thinking although Gar, Prudy, Sam, Kathy and Rachel have already started weighing in their thoughts on the situation.

OK, I should have put their instead of there. Well, what do you want, it is Friday, I am off until Tuesday and my brain already started on vacation.

Pay attention... correct opinion follows...

Response 1 - Is she related to Michael Palin (of Monty Python fame), and if so, can she sing the Spam song and do the fish slapping dance? If so, I will vote for her.

Response 2 - Sarah Palin is the next Dan Quayle. I hope I am wrong, but I have a bad feeling that a consumate and seasoned BS artist like Joe Biden will shred her to little pieces during a VP debate.

Response 3 - Since she served served two terms on the Wasilla City Council and then became Mayor of Wasilla, all I want to know is; does Judy know her and has she ever rocked out to Portugal. the Man?

Response 4 - (My real response) - Zowie. What a dark horse. I was hoping for Mitt Romney, who I think would be a better pick (but controversial because he is a Mormon).
In my view, this can not be McCain's personal pick. This sounds like some GOP strategy wonk trying to figure out the demographic of that would draw votes from the following groups.
1) People who want a woman in office, party affiliation does not matter.
2) People who want diversity choice in office, but prefer a woman over an African American.
3) People who think it is cool that she is wearing fur in her picture on Wikipedia

The pledge

In part of a 2006 survey Palin was asked the following question: "Are you offended by the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?"

Palin's answer: "Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I’ll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance."

That was 2 strikes in one swing. Not only does the Pledge of Allegiance have nothing to do with the founding fathers (It was not even written until 1892) but "Under God" was nowhere to be found in the original and was added in 1951 to separate us from those godless commies.

Fail.

Head Cheese's picture

But of course you already KNEW that...

I think that what she may have beeen pointing out was that the use of word God in the Pledge of Allegiance was consistent with usage by the founding fathers.

Because I love Thomas Jefferson

Here are some thoughts on pledging allegiance, religion and our "job" as citizens of the U.S.:

"All persons shall have full and free liberty of religious opinion; nor shall any be compelled to frequent or maintain any religious institution."
-Draft Constitution for Virginia, 1776

"God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ... What country before ever existed a century and half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."
-Letter to William Stevens Smith, 1787

"I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent."
-Letter to Francis Hopkinson, 1789

And another thing...

I thought the first thing you might focus on would be her support of the teaching of creationism alongside evolution in schools.

mas0n's picture

Spin?

I keep hearing people mention that she supports the teaching of evolution in schools, but whenever I'm given a source it cites her as stating that we should be allowed to debate the curriculum in our schools even to the extent of considering creationism. I'll refrain from losing all respect for her until I see where she clearly states that she's a moron and the earth is 6000 years old, or something to that effect.

Hi Everyone! Here are the

Hi Everyone!

Here are the reasons I like Obama and will be voting for him.

1. His tax cut plan makes sense. Why give a bigger tax cut to people making over $250K a year for couples and $200K for singles? The rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer - the middle class is bleeding and needs the assistance

2. Simply put - I believe in the womans right to chose. While I may not necessarily agree with abortion and don't feel it is something that I could do. Who am I to say that it is not ok for someone else?

3. Education plan that I agree with, especially giving more money to the Head Start programs.

I am tired of the republicans and hearing that "The fundamentals of our economy are strong" - John McCain August 08. The fundamentals might be strong for the rich, but for us working class we are not seeing that translated down. I live in Ohio and have witnessed friends and family who are struggling to find jobs and sell their homes. The candidates can't win without Ohio, I have watched the Republicans come and dazzle us with their ideas of how they can help for the last two elections and in the end nothing is accomplished and we are worse off then we were before.

I look forward to this election and hopefully the change that it will bring. Oh - and I can't wait to watch Joe Biden tear Sarah Palin up in the Vice Presidential debate.

Quick Question

Rachel... I shoulder an enormous tax burden today and am wondering how much more anyone thinks I should give to my government for essentially the same or less services than someone who makes a fraction of what I am fortunate enough to make.

I have been working hard for over 30 years. I am up before 5:00 A.M. every day and put in a 55 to 65 hour work week. Am I a member of the working class of which you speak?

I was in the office prior to 7:00 AM today, and as I sit here at work at about 7:00 PM, I just wonder how many others, outside my own family, that I should be expected to support who in many cases have only a fraction of my work ethic and who could care less about my welfare, but who expect me to care and contribute to theirs.

I would appreciate your thoughts about my working class status.

Love Sam

This is just one more reason why the Fair Tax makes sense; people should only be taxed on the services they use, not the income they make.

Trying to fix our tax situation by shifting income tax burdens is like trying to fix slavery by swapping the field and house slaves. Have I ever mentioned that I hate the income tax? ;)

Uncle Sam - I am not going

Uncle Sam -

I am not going to get baited into a "who works harder" debate with you. Most working Americans believe they work harder and longer then the next person - thus part of the reason why Americans are killing themselves at work and not leaving any time for family, friends or vacations.

Simply put, one of the greatest things about American is freedom. We have a democracy - and individuals have a right to chose. I chose to vote for Obama because I feel his beliefs are more in line with my own. You chose to vote for McCain and I am sure you have your own reasons.

I personally don't like McCain, I haven't like him through the entire election and was personally offended by him and his reaction to the abortion discussion. While I personally don't think it is for me - who am I to judge someone else?

McCain reminds me of a cranky old man who sits on his porch and yells at kids in the neighborhood all day, I just don't want that to be the face of our government over the next 4 years.
